Alexander Tah-ray Yui, Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., met with House Speaker Mike Johnson for the first time Jan. 9 in Washington, D.C. to convey the government’s commitment to deepening ties with its like-minded partner.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yui thanked Congress on behalf of Taiwan’s government and people for its long-standing bipartisan support that has contributed to enhancing Taiwan’s security, safeguarding its democratic system and promoting bilateral economic relations.

The robust ties are built upon the shared values of freedom and democracy, the ambassador said, adding that he looks forward to working with the speaker and Congress to further strengthen the partnership going forward.

Johnson told the press that the U.S. stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Taiwan, adding that it is an important issue for his country and the entire world.

The speaker said that the U.S. wants to assist in defending Taiwan and deterring China’s military provocations. He reaffirmed that Congress stands with Taiwan and for democracy and the principles that Taiwan has been trying to advance, adding that the meeting with Yui shows staunch support for the bilateral relationship.
