The Ministry of Foreign Affairs arranged a tour of Taiwan’s key aviation and defense firms July 7-9 to bring international delegates up to speed on developments in the sectors.

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee led ambassadors and representatives from 25 countries stationed in Taiwan on a busy trip around the southern city of Kaohsiung and county of Pingtung.

According to the MOFA, the group visited top shipbuilder CSBC Corp. Taiwan; a plant belonging to leading aviation firm Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation; Taiwan UAV, the first local developer of unmanned aerial vehicles; and PilotGaea Technologies Co. Ltd., an award-winning GIS software and analysis solutions provider.

Wu said during the trip that aviation and national defense are two sectors being promoted under the government’s five-plus-two innovative industries plan and six core strategic industries initiative. The tour revealed opportunities for cooperation between Taiwan and its like-minded partners, he added.
In response, the attendees applauded the fruitful trip and acknowledged the potential partnerships that could arise from it, the ministry said.

The five-plus-two plan, unveiled in 2016, targets the high-growth sectors of biotech, green energy, national defense, smart machinery and Internet of Things, while promoting the circular economy and a new paradigm for agricultural development. Launched four years later, the six core strategic industries initiative involves digital and information technology, cybersecurity, medical technology and precision medicine, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile industries.
