The government of Taiwan has pledged to set up a US$1 million fund to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 21.
Taiwan’s Rep. to Poland Sharon Wu concluded a memorandum of understanding with Tadeusz Truskolaski and Jacek Jaśkowia, chairperson and board member of the Union of Polish Metropolises, respectively, Dec. 20 in Warsaw. The nongovernmental organization was established in 1990 and represents the 12 cities of Warsaw, Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Gdańsk, Katowice, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Poznań, Rzeszów, Szczecin and Wrocław.
Under the pact, a Taiwan fund will be set up to help local Polish administrations and nongovernmental organizations assist Ukrainian refugees in the central European country, through life displacement adaptation projects and promotion of education for children and youths, the MOFA said.
During the ceremony, Wu praised Poland for its generous acceptance of the large number of Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s invasion of the eastern European country. Taiwan faces similar threats from an authoritarian regime and the country has been working with Poland to offer humanitarian assistance to those in need, she said.
Wu said the fund underscores Taiwan’s unwavering commitment to democracy, adding that, in the spirit of unity, the country looks forward to working with more local governments and partner entities in Poland to defend freedom and protect human rights.
In response, Truskolaski welcomed the donation and said Ukraine is fighting on behalf of the free world, adding that Poland has accepted more than 3 million Ukrainian refugees so far. (SFC-E)
