History

Hualien Prison originally located at the downtown Chunsan Road of Hualien City. Due to the facility was too old to accommodate the prisoners, the Ministry of Justice then decided built a brand new prison locate at Ji-an Township, Hualien which opened in the year 1982. The facility is situated on approximately 12 metric-acres of land just north of the Liyu Lake scenery spot. In 2011, this prison became subordinate to the Agency of Corrections, Ministry of Justice and thus changed its full name to "Hualien Prison, Agency of Corrections, Ministry of Justice".

Organization

According to the organizational statute, the prison is subordinate to Agency of Corrections, Ministry Of Justice, which comprises one Superintendent, who conducts the business of whole prison, one Deputy Superintendent, who assists the Superintendent in the handling of matters and one Secretary, who is engaged in research, evaluation and also assists the Superintendent in the handling of matters . Besides the Women's prison, the facility is divided into 6 sections and 4 managerial offices, including General Affair Section, Guard and Control Section, Edification and Education Section, Business Section, Sanitation and Health Section, Investigation Section, Personnel Office, Accounting Office, Civil Service Ethics Office, Statistics Office. Moreover, there are one extension school and one branch prison.

Capacity

Our prison admits the following inmates: A. Inmates charged by the Hualien Branch, Taiwan High Prosecutors Office and the Taiwan Hualien District Prosecutors Office for more than six months. B. Other inmates that meet the prerequisite stipulations of prison transfers are also housed here. The authorized maximum capacity of the prison is 1,530 inmates.
